Volunteer and Help Us Restore a Piece of History
Welcome to the Barnton Bunker volunteer page. By volunteering with us, you can become part of a dedicated team that is working to restore a piece of history while learning new skills. Our project is a unique opportunity for those interested in hands-on construction and restoration skills while contributing to a worthwhile cause.
Why Volunteer & What Will You Learn?
Volunteering at Barnton Bunker is an excellent opportunity to develop new skills and gain valuable experience. It’s much more than restoration work – as well as hands-on construction, there are opportunities to get involved in outdoor projects, media, events, and outreach. You can expect to learn a range of practical skills, including:
- Plastering & Rendering – repairing and finishing bunker walls and ceilings.
- Carpentry & Joinery – helping to build and restore fixtures, fittings, and structures.
- Electrical Basics – supporting safe, supervised electrical work as part of the restoration.
- Landscaping & Groundworks – helping with paths, outdoor spaces, and garden areas around the site.
- Metalworking & Welding – assisting with restoring metalwork and bunker infrastructure.
- Media & Content Creation – photography, short video, and social media content that shares the project’s story.
- Events & Visitor Experience – helping with tours, open days, and special events at the bunker.
- Outreach, Funding & Grants – contacting organisations, supporting funding applications, and helping with donations.
- Teamwork & Time Management – working as part of a friendly volunteer team on real projects.
- Historical Research & Documentation – helping to record and share the history of Barnton Bunker.

Community Garden Volunteering
Garden volunteers help with raised beds and paths, planting vegetables and flowers, caring for trees and shrubs, and creating habitats for birds, insects, and other wildlife. It’s a practical, hands-on role that directly improves how the bunker and its surroundings look and feel.
You don’t need to be an experienced gardener – we’ll show you what to do, and you can work at your own pace. It’s a relaxed, social way to volunteer: spend time outdoors, meet other volunteers, and watch the site change with the seasons.
