Barnton Bunker is best known for its Cold War history, underground tunnels and ongoing restoration, but there’s another story growing on site. Last week, volunteers joined Gino, our bee consultant and Scottish Expert Beemaster from Simply Honey Co, for a hands-on session with the bunker’s bees. The hives support the local ecosystem, give volunteers the chance to learn practical beekeeping skills, and help raise vital funds through Bunker Honey for the restoration of this remarkable Edinburgh heritage site.

Last weekend, Barnton Bunker hosted three YouTube creators for a live Q&A from an undisclosed location deep inside Edinburgh’s Cold War nuclear bunker. Mike from UK Urban Prepper, Brian from Scottish Prepper 73 and Alan from World Survivalist explored the tunnels, shared their reactions live with over 1,000 viewers, and helped uncover the story of a remarkable heritage site once thought lost to fire, vandalism and time.
We Hosted an Arm Wrestling Tournament in a Cold War Nuclear Bunker.
Last weekend, Barnton Bunker swapped Cold War silence for cheers, chalk, music, and serious strength as we hosted a CSAL arm wrestling tournament deep underground in Edinburgh. From the electric atmosphere and stacked matches to The Bald Baker serving food above ground and Daniel Currie keeping the music going below, it was a community event unlike anything we’ve hosted before, all inside Scotland’s largest Cold War nuclear bunker.

Barnton Bunker recently welcomed historian Ian Brown for the launch of his new book, Air Defence In Scotland 1938–46, in the very WWII operations room connected to the story it tells. With around 40 guests in attendance, the evening brought Scotland’s wartime air defence history vividly back to life in a setting that could not have been more fitting, reflecting Barnton Bunker’s growing role as a place where history is not only preserved, but actively shared and experienced.

Barnton Bunker recently partnered with Royal British Veterans Enterprise to host their first-ever Chairman’s Sleep Out in Scotland, welcoming business leaders who gave up a night of warmth and comfort to sleep outside in cardboard boxes and raise vital funds and awareness for veterans facing homelessness. Set against the powerful backdrop of a former Cold War bunker, the event highlighted both the reality many veterans still face and Barnton Bunker’s wider role as more than a heritage site, a place that can actively support meaningful community and charity work.
Local Fire Brigade Visit Barnton Bunker for Safety Familiarisation
Not every visit to Barnton Bunker is a tour, event or training day; some happen quietly behind the scenes as part of essential fire and safety planning. As restoration of our historic Cold War nuclear bunker continues, we are always learning and improving, so we were grateful to welcome a local fire crew for a familiarisation visit to better understand the site layout. Barnton Bunker is a volunteer-led project built on community, collaboration and care, and we’re thankful to everyone helping restore it and keep it safe — including The Watch Commander Crew Toll White Watch.
New Emergency Lighting Installed at Barnton Bunker
What happens if the power goes out inside a Cold War nuclear bunker? At Barnton Bunker, new IP-rated emergency lighting has been installed throughout the site as part of ongoing restoration work. Each fitting has a built-in battery system that switches on automatically if the power fails, helping people move safely through the bunker. Fire doors have also been updated as part of wider underground safety improvements.
