Explore Barnton Bunker’s Hidden Cold War History for National Heritage Week
We’re excited to announce that Barnton Bunker will be taking part in the very first Cold War National Heritage Week, running from 16th to 23rd May 2025.
As part of this nationwide event, we’re opening our historic R4 Bunker — a once-secret underground facility built in the 1950s — for a special guided tour on Saturday, 17th May at 1:00 PM.
Come and explore original command rooms, communications spaces, and learn about the bunker’s crucial role in Britain’s Cold War defences. It’s a rare chance to step inside one of Scotland’s most significant Cold War sites and uncover a hidden chapter of Edinburgh’s history.
