First Aid Refresher Gives Barnton Bunker Volunteers Confidence to Respond in an Emergency
Keeping our volunteers safe is an important part of running Barnton Bunker, and during the summer the team had the opportunity to refresh some essential first aid skills with a CPR and AED awareness session delivered by Corstorphine First Aid Support and Training (CFAST).
For many of our volunteers, the session was a valuable reminder of skills they had learned before but hadn’t necessarily had to use for some time.
One volunteer explained: “After completing a more comprehensive first aid course previously, I realised just how much of the detail had faded from my memory.”
It provided an opportunity to revisit some of the basics, ask questions about specific situations and, importantly, rebuild confidence in knowing what to do if an emergency occurs.
Refreshing the basics
The session covered some of the fundamental skills that can make a real difference in an emergency, including recognising when someone is unresponsive, performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED).
For our volunteers, being able to revisit these steps in a practical setting was particularly useful.
As one volunteer put it, the course was an opportunity to go back over “all the steps to do when someone is unresponsive” as well as CPR and defibrillator use.
Having the opportunity to ask questions was another important part of the session. First aid is one of those areas where small details can easily be forgotten, and having an experienced instructor available to clarify those questions made the refresher particularly valuable.
Another volunteer said that they “appreciated the way the information was taught and the opportunity to ask questions throughout the session”.
Confidence matters
First aid training isn't just about knowing what to do. It's also about having the confidence to actually act when something happens.
At a busy visitor attraction like Barnton Bunker, our volunteers work with members of the public, other volunteers and visitors of all ages. While we hope that serious incidents never happen, being prepared means that our team is better equipped to respond if they do.
The session also gave volunteers the opportunity to learn about some recent changes to basic first aid guidance and to revisit areas they hadn't encountered for some time.
For some, it highlighted how useful regular refresher training can be.
CPR and AED awareness
CFAST founder and trainer, Ryan, delivered the session, sharing his experience of teaching life-saving skills to communities across Edinburgh.
With nearly a decade of experience delivering CPR and AED awareness sessions to people of all ages, Ryan was able to combine the essential practical skills with plenty of time for questions and discussion.
The focus was simple: helping people recognise a cardiac arrest, start CPR and use a public access defibrillator when one is available.
These are skills that can genuinely save a life.
CFAST's work focuses on bringing life-saving skills into communities across Edinburgh, helping people develop the knowledge and confidence to respond when it matters.
A useful reminder for the whole team
The feedback from our volunteers was overwhelmingly positive, with several highlighting how useful it was to revisit knowledge they had previously learned.
There was also useful feedback about areas volunteers would like to explore further in future training, including dealing with wounds and supporting elderly people.
That is exactly what a good refresher should do: remind us of what we know, identify what we have forgotten and highlight where we can continue to learn.
A huge thank you to Ryan and the team at CFAST for delivering such an engaging and useful session, and to everyone who took part.
We hope our volunteers never have to use these skills in a serious situation.
But if they do, we're now a little more prepared and a lot more confident about knowing what to do.
Thank you to CFAST for helping us keep our volunteers equipped with skills that really can save lives.
