Barnton Bunker wins Inspiring Volunteer Award at Edinburgh City Chambers

On the 2nd of June 2026, the Barnton Bunker Preservation Society SCIO was honoured to receive an Inspiring Volunteer Award in the Team category at a ceremony hosted by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh at the City Chambers.

We were nominated for the award in recognition of the work carried out by our volunteers and were delighted to have the award accepted on behalf of everyone involved with the project.

It was a proud evening, not just for us but for every organisation recognised on the night. Seeing so many groups from across Edinburgh celebrated for their contribution to the city highlighted the enormous impact that volunteers make within our communities every day.

Volunteers have been working at Barnton Bunker since 2011 and have played a vital role in preserving and restoring this unique historic site. Thanks to thousands of hours of volunteer effort, the bunker has been transformed from a neglected and largely inaccessible structure into a place where people can explore Edinburgh’s Cold War and Second World War heritage.

This award belongs to everyone who has given their time, skills and enthusiasm to the project over the years. Whether carrying out restoration work, maintaining the grounds, maintaining vehicles and machinery, leading tours, researching the site’s history, caring for the animals or helping behind the scenes, every contribution has helped move the project forward.

We would like to thank Volunteer Edinburgh for this recognition and the Lord Provost for hosting such a special evening.

Most of all, thank you to every volunteer who has been part of the journey so far. This award is a reflection of your hard work, dedication and commitment to preserving Barnton Bunker’s heritage for future generations.
