We Hosted an Arm Wrestling Tournament in a Cold War Nuclear Bunker.
An Event Unlike Any Other at Barnton Bunker
Last weekend, Barnton Bunker opened its doors to something a little different. In a space once built to survive nuclear war, athletes competed in one of Scotland's most anticipated arm wrestling events of the year.
It was loud, electric, and it was exactly the kind of event helping bring the bunker back to life and serve the community.
What Was the CSAL Tournament?
Central Strength Armwrestling League (CSAL) is Scotland's leading arm wrestling community, based out of Central Strength Gym in Glasgow and built around one simple idea: everyone is welcome at the table.
From first-timers looking for their debut match to seasoned competitors chasing the next challenge, CSAL has been building one of Scotland's most exciting sporting communities. Their super-match events are known for being competitive, inclusive, and seriously good fun.
Last weekend, they brought that energy to Edinburgh and straight underground at the bunker!
The roster was stacked across, matches, and prizes were provided by Gods of Grips. Entry was free for competitors and spectators alike, with Barnton Bunker providing the space free of charge to support this community event.
The Venue: A Brief History
Barnton Bunker isn't your average event space. Hidden within the affluent suburbs of Edinburgh, it was originally built in the 1940s as a Royal Air Force Fighter Command Operations Room scrambling Hurricanes and Spitfires to protect British skies from the German Luftwaffe.
In the early 1950s, a second phase of construction buried a three-level nuclear bunker deep underground as part of Britain's top-secret ROTOR programme, the Sector Operations Centre for the whole of Scotland. Its reinforced concrete walls stretch up to 3.5 metres thick, built to withstand a nuclear detonation in Edinburgh city centre.
Over the decades it served as a Regional Seat of Government, a designated emergency hub for the Scottish Office, and the proposed base for post-nuclear recovery operations. It was officially decommissioned in the early 1990s.
Today, Barnton Bunker is a charity-led restoration project. Every event and visit helps the preservation of this incredible piece of Scotland's history, so when you come underground, you're not just attending an event, you're helping save it.

On the Day
Doors opened at 12:30pm. By the time the first match got underway, the atmosphere was electric.
We had a livestream running on Instagram so nobody had to miss a moment.
The chalk was flying, the crowd was loud, and Daniel Currie kept the music pumping throughout, his DJ set added an energy to the bunker that had to be heard to be believed.
More than a few people were genuinely surprised to find themselves this deep underground cheering on arm wrestlers.
The Food Van That Said Yes
When you get asked if you can do catering at a decommissioned nuclear bunker in Edinburgh, apparently the answer is obviously yes.
The Bald Baker showed up, parked up, and served up and it was a blast!
Above ground, tasty catering. Below ground, arm wrestling. In the tunnels? Heritage week tours running all weekend! Exactly how it should be.
