The Air Defence System in Scotland 1938-46
The Air Defence System in Scotland 1938–46 by Ian Brown is the first comprehensive history of Scotland’s air defence network during the Second World War.
This detailed and richly researched book explores how radar stations, Royal Observer Corps posts, sector stations, operations rooms, communications networks, and Gun Operations Rooms worked together to detect, track, and respond to enemy aircraft. Moving beyond the familiar story of the Battle of Britain, Ian Brown reveals how Scotland’s air defence system developed throughout the war, adapting to new technology, changing tactics, and the constant pressure of wartime operations.
With detailed accounts of Scotland’s air defence centres, a full listing of Royal Observer Corps posts, first-hand testimonies, and rare wartime photographs, this book is an essential read for anyone interested in Scotland’s wartime history, aviation, radar, the RAF, the WAAF, the Luftwaffe, or local military heritage.
The book also has a special connection to Barnton Bunker. From 1943 to 1945, the surface building at Barnton served as one of Scotland’s wartime sector stations, helping control fighter aircraft across its assigned area. Ian Brown launched this book in Barnton Bunker’s historic operations room, making it a particularly meaningful title for visitors and supporters of the bunker.
