Winding Walk 2026 Explore Edinburgh Differently

Winding Walk is a relaxed-paced guided nature and town walk exploring some of Edinburgh's hidden paths and scenic trails. Starting and ending at the historic Barnton Bunker complex in Corstorphine Hill Forest, the walk takes you through forest, river, beach and village environments while collecting stamps and enjoying poetry readings at checkpoints along the way.

Volunteer-Led Charity Fundraiser Organised and led by volunteers from Barnton Bunker Preservation Society SCIO. Funds raised support the ongoing restoration and development of the Barnton Bunker site.

Route One

6.5 Mile Route

A relaxed guided walking route for visitors who want to enjoy the landscape, checkpoints and atmosphere at a comfortable pace.

Maximum 70 Volunteer Guided

Route Two

8 Mile Route

The longer route covers more ground and moves at a slightly quicker pace — relaxed, yet brisk — while retaining the full Winding Walk experience.

Your Winding Walk

Check In From 10:30am

Arrive at Barnton Bunker, check in with our volunteers and collect your Winding Walk stamp card.

Groups Depart at 11:05am

The two groups set out on their chosen routes, each led by its own volunteer walking guide.

Explore Edinburgh

Travel through forest, river, beach and village environments while discovering hidden paths, scenic trails, wildlife and local history.

Checkpoints, Stamps & Poetry

Stop at checkpoints along the route to collect stamps and hear poetry readings before continuing your journey.

Return to Barnton Bunker

Both routes finish back at the historic Barnton Bunker complex after several hours of walking.

Before You Walk

Start & Finish Barnton Quarry R4 ROTOR Complex, 35 Clermiston Road North, Edinburgh EH4 7BN.
Bring Water Please bring a water bottle with enough water for several hours of walking.
Walking Shoes Wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes suitable for woodland paths and mixed terrain.
Dress for the Weather This is an outdoor event. Bring suitable layers and waterproof clothing depending on the forecast.
Walking Pace The 6.5-mile route is relaxed. The 8-mile route moves at a slightly quicker “relaxed, yet brisk” pace.
Allow Several Hours Both routes take several hours to complete. Please plan your day accordingly.
A volunteer-led FUNdraiser for Barnton Bunker. Winding Walk is organised by volunteers from Barnton Bunker Preservation Society SCIO. Every ticket helps raise funds for the continuing restoration, preservation and development of the historic Barnton Bunker complex.
